Stumpgrinder

1-day Lantra CLMC 36 X

Stumpgrinders are a specialised piece of equipment that an increasing number of tree surgery contractors use to remove tree stumps. They generally consist of a heavy steel flywheel with tungsten-faced teeth mounted on it, which is powered by a suitably sized engine. Smaller models are usually petrol, larger models are almost always diesel. The spinning flywheel is moved in an arc from side to side, and beats the tree stump into chips. Any machine which can reduce a tree stump into tiny pieces is potentially dangerous, both to the operator and bystanders, and stumpgrinder training is therefore essential.

There are two very specific risks associated with using stumpgrinders – contact with underground services, and thrown objects (stones) which can potentially travel considerable distances. Correct stumpgrinder training will teach the operator how to minimise these risks.

Assessment

The Lantra Course - Use of Stumpgrinders - is a 1-day course with integrated assessment by the instructor. This Lantra Certificate of Competence is recognised by the HSE but, if candidates wish to gain an NPTC Certificate of Competence, the Lantra training they have received should equip them to pass the NPTC assessment.

Formal Stumpgrinder training is a legal requirement under PUWER - the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations.
